What is brainspotting?

Brainspotting Therapy

Brainspotting is a powerful, brain-based therapy that helps people process trauma, emotional pain, and stress that may be stored deep in the nervous system—often beyond words.

Developed by Dr. David Grand, Brainspotting works by identifying specific eye positions (“brainspots”) that are connected to unprocessed experiences in the brain. By gently focusing on these brainspots in a safe, supportive environment, the brain is able to access and release emotional and physiological distress, allowing for deep healing and integration.

How Brainspotting Works

When we experience trauma, chronic stress, or overwhelming emotions, the brain and body can become “stuck” in survival mode. Even when we intellectually understand what happened, the nervous system may continue to react as if the threat is still present.

Brainspotting helps access the parts of the brain where these experiences are stored by:

  • Using eye position to locate where distress is held in the brain
  • Allowing the brain and body to process at their own pace
  • Supporting natural self-healing without forcing reliving or retelling trauma in detail

Clients often describe Brainspotting as a deeply focused, mindful, and body-aware experience rather than a traditional talk therapy session.

What Brainspotting Can Help With

Brainspotting can be effective for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Trauma and complex trauma (including childhood trauma)
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Depression
  • PTSD and stress-related symptoms
  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • Chronic stress or burnout
  • Performance issues (e.g., academics, work, athletics)
  • Grief and loss
  • Somatic or body-based symptoms related to stress

What a Brainspotting Session Is Like

During a Brainspotting session, you remain fully awake and in control. Your therapist helps you identify a brainspot while you tune into your internal experience—thoughts, emotions, and body sensations. You are not required to share details unless you choose to.

Sessions are:

  • Client-led and paced for safety
  • Non-judgmental and supportive
  • Focused on both emotional and physical experiences
  • Designed to build regulation before processing deeper trauma when needed

Brainspotting can be used on its own or integrated with other therapeutic approaches.

A Gentle, Nervous-System-Focused Approach

Brainspotting honors the wisdom of the brain and body. Rather than “fixing” you, it supports your system in doing what it already knows how to do—heal.

This approach is especially helpful for individuals who:

  • Feel stuck despite traditional talk therapy
  • Have difficulty putting experiences into words
  • Become overwhelmed when discussing trauma
  • Want a more body-based, integrative approach
